Sydney, Australia, Hours #16+17 and #23 of 24skate#3

Hello,

The first Sydney leg of the event (9am - 11am Australian Eastern Standard Time) was carried out in a relay format, as we have done in previous years. This year there were 6 skaters relaying (5 completive Speed skaters and one rec skater). We bettered the best of our past two 24skate participations (2004) by approx 2.122km.
The track was a flat smooth asphalt surface in Deverall Park with a lap length of 333.333 metres.

Both Lee Mullard and Myself did 3 lap turns (1km leads) Peter Thompson, Adam Mullard and Matthew Hendy did 2 lap turns (667m) Anthony Tuy did 1 lap turns (333m). It works out that we cycled through about once every 4.333km.

We covered 68.822km in the two hours. In the first hour (9am - 10am Australian Eastern Standard Time) we covered 34.551 km and in the second Hour (10am - 11am Australian Eastern Standard Time) we covered 34.271km.
The conditions were dry and fine with a small amount of wind present.

Here is a table detailing the overall results for the 9am-11am leg.
Name Average Lap Time (s) Average Speed (km/h) Total Distance Covered (km) Total Skating Time (min:s) Max single Lap Speed (km/h)

For the second leg completed in Sydney (4pm - 5pm Australian Eastern Standard Time) I Skated by myself around Parramatta Park. The surface is not overly fast and the track has a significant hill which makes average speeds relatively slow.
The conditions were dry but pretty windy, it felt like there was a head wind for the entire lap (the hill in the middle probably helps to cause this situation as when the wind blows the other way there can be the effect of a tail wind the entire way).
There were also a lot of slow driving cars that impeded me at times as I had to pass them. The lap length is 3.1142km. In the 1 hour that I skated I covered 30.1km.

Regards

Daniel Thomson
