Munich, Germany: Hour 20 of 24skate #14
Dear skaters and friends around the world,
initially I was scheduled for hour #21, but the weather forecast announced begin of rain exactly for that hour. So I decided to take
hour #20 and skate a bit into hour #21 in order to keep it covered. The sky above my traditional 24skate arena "Theresienwiese", the venue for the famous
Oktoberfest, looked exactly as grey as could be deducted from the forecast (why do they not forecast the sky
color?). On a grey Sunday morning in June, nothing seems to triggers the impression of the world biggest beer festival.
But wait, what is this? I see. They have already started to build the most urgent parts of the Oktoberfest infrastructure first.
Bavaria's patron(ess) raises the laurel wreath to welcome the lonely skater.
The lonely skater looks optimistic,
but the rain cover above his camera bag reveals his pessimist assessment of the weather to come. Can you see the first drops on the
tarmac? There is even one on the bag!
I started with the stroke of the clock - bells - of near St. Peter and Paul (see first photo in the background). First laps were okay,
but then the wind became stronger and slowed me significantly down. 15 minutes before the hour the occasional rain drops turned into
real rain and I tried to escape it on the sidewalk aroung the "Theresienwiese", covered by the leaves of friendly trees. Still I had to
do some funny steps on the slippery tarmac to stay on my wheels. At the end of the hour, my GPS watch showed 26.6 kilometers. Less
than I my training session last weekend, but okay under the given conditions. And 0.1 km more than last year!
Here you can see me afterwards under these trees. Take a
close look to the drops on my glasses...
The rain became so heavy and the pavement so slippery that I decided to spare my bearings and bones and took the metro home. This way hour #21
only received 1.8 km.
Best regards
Clemens
